The Sacrifice Zone
Presented by Theatre Gargantua in association with The Uncertainty Principle
– A courageous and searing investigation of new millennium issues –
An industrial explosion shatters lives in an isolated resource town, rocking the balance of the community. While Alex and Hannah struggle with the loss of their partners, Laura and Patrick renegotiate the boundaries of a love affair, and newcomer Elly watches the emotional landscape change as arrestingly as the physical environment does. When everything is at stake, what would you sacrifice to make things right?
The Sacrifice Zone cuts right to fundamental questions of who and what are our responsibilities? and is balance, indeed justice, ever possible? Gargantua explores real world issues of individual, corporate and environmental accountability through their signature physical and critically acclaimed contemporary visual style in this gripping production based on a script by celebrated Australian playwright Suzie Miller.
DEVELOPING The SACRIFICE ZONE
Artistic Director Jacquie P.A. Thomas and playwright Suzie Miller met in Quebec City during rehearsals for Robert Lepage’s new show, Playing Cards and discovered shared affinities for similar philosophies and aesthetics. Once Thomas revealed that Gargantua’s next cycle was exploring the idea of justice, Miller’s work as a human rights lawyer seemed a perfect fit. Another Gargantua collaboration was born.
Throughout our two year creation process we have explored the human instinct for fairness, and our unquenchable need for justice. In our chaotic, competitive universe, justice is a paradigm that defies objective definition. Gradually the question emerged: how much would you sacrifice to make things right?
